The VAN is essential - Tim Anderegg
Our partner organizations have been using the VAN as their primary tool for voter contact for several cycles now. It's truly a huge improvement over the past; no more relying on spreadsheets or Access to manage data. While the learning curve can be a little steep for folks who haven't had much experience with web applications before, once you get the basics down the work flow of creating lists of voters, setting up survey questions, and printing walk sheets becomes second nature. Also, the VAN folks are always innovating. They've created great tools like Virtual Phonebank, and they even let you use iPhones for canvassing! Overall the VAN has become an essential part of our work.

ISSI Are Data Heroes - Tim Anderegg
ISSI has been invaluable in helping dozens of our partner organizations begin to understand advanced topics such as micro-targeting, modeling, and using tools such as the VAN. They have infinite patience when it comes to helping people learn the ropes, cut lists, run counts, and engage in the many other tasks that organizers often find daunting. If you get a chance to work with them, be sure to take it!

My Review - Virginia Majority
Good for the price. Pretty robust features, but not always the easiest to figure out how to use. Once you get familiar with it, it's pretty functional. Salsa is behind more expensive CRM vendors that can provide much better social media functionality, and a better user interface.

Partisan races watch out - Jason Rosenbaum
NationBuilder, from what I've seen and head, is a great, full featured, and easy to use toolset. But it's available to both Democrats and Republicans, unlike most online toolsets. As an online organizer, the thought my opponents have access to core tools like this, just as I might have, makes me very nervous. If you're running a partisan race, beware.

Republican firm, don't use - Jason Rosenbaum
NationBuilder is "... a company that’s been in beta for a little more than a year, and now we’re the technology of the bulk of the nationwide Republican races,” according to their President and co-founder. Progressives should not use.
